DownMark for iOS: Your Personal Article Library, Now on iPhone and iPad
DownMark has been available on Mac for a while now, helping users clip web pages into clean Markdown with a single click. Over that time, one question has come up more than any other: is there an iOS version?
The short answer is yes, and as of July 23, it’s live on the App Store (the review queue took a few more days than we anticipated at launch time).
But bringing DownMark to iOS wasn’t as simple as porting the Mac app. The Mac version was designed from the ground up as a lightweight browser extension tool — click the button, get a .md file, save it wherever you want. That workflow assumes a file system, a dedicated save dialog, and the ability to wake the main app from an extension reliably.
iOS doesn’t offer any of that. There’s no file system to dump files into, and browser extensions on iOS are far more constrained. A direct port would have been a frustrating experience.
So instead, we went back to the drawing board and rebuilt DownMark for iOS around a fundamentally different model: an article library.
How iOS Is Different
Instead of saving loose Markdown files to a folder, DownMark for iOS stores every clipped article in a built-in library. When you clip a page from Safari, the content goes straight into your library — no save dialog, no file naming, no decisions to make. It’s just there.
What the iOS app gives you:
- Article library — All your clippings in one place, automatically organized and searchable
- Offline reading — A built-in Markdown reader so you can browse your saved articles anywhere, even without internet
- iCloud sync — Your library stays in sync across iPhone and iPad automatically
- Search — Find any article by title or description
- Flexible export — Export individual articles as Markdown, or batch-export multiple articles as a ZIP file
How you clip on iOS:
- Safari extension — Tap the DownMark icon in Safari’s toolbar to extract and save directly to your library
- Share extension — Use the system share sheet from Safari or any other browser to send pages to DownMark
This doesn’t replace the Mac experience — it’s a different tool for a different platform. The Mac version remains the best option if you want to save files directly to your file system for use with Obsidian, VS Code, or other writing tools. The iOS version excels at collecting and reading on the go, with your library always available in your pocket.
Pricing
The two platforms use different pricing models:
- DownMark for Mac — $4.99 paid download. Buy once, own it forever.
- DownMark for iOS — Free download, with a one-time in-app purchase to unlock DownMark Pro (unlimited exports without watermarks, search, ZIP batch export, and all future features). The free tier lets you clip and read articles with basic export.
DownMark for Mac 1.9.3
Alongside the iOS launch, the Mac version has been updated to 1.9.3 with several significant improvements:
- New extension UI — The extension popup has been replaced with a frosted glass overlay, showing extraction progress and results more clearly
- Multi-language support — DownMark now supports 9 languages: English, Chinese (Simplified & Traditional), Japanese, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian
- Reliability improvements — Fixed issues where the extension would hang after repeated clicks, and improved how the extension communicates with the Mac app to ensure clips are always saved successfully
- Bug tracking — Integrated Bugsnag crash reporting for faster issue resolution
- Export loading overlay — Visual feedback during export to prevent duplicate operations

Conclusion
The iOS version of DownMark has been a long time coming, shaped by conversations with users who wanted the same clipping power on their phones and tablets. The result isn’t a port — it’s a reimagining of what a web clipper can be when you design around a library instead of a file system.
